Coolant intrusion into cylinder 2 causing misfire in cylinder 2 and subsequent P0302 error code. Coolant level drops in reservoir and engine begins to overheat unless turned off.
On appx 2/1/2026, when accelerating over 50mph to enter the highway, the car started to violently shake would not accelerate any higher. This caused my daughter to be a danger on the highway at such a low speed and she nearly was hit by a semi. The check engine line turned on when this occurred and then went off when the vehicle was turned off so we continued to drive it and it happened 2 more times so we brought it to be looked at. I took it to a local shop that had just changed the oil, thinking it was related, however they ran the diagnostic code(s) and found that there is an open service bulletin at Ford for this issue. The diagnostic codes were P0301 and P0316 for misfires in the cylinders. They are aware of the issue which is causing coolant to leak into the cylinder and the only remedy is to basically replace the engine which I was quoted over $10,000 to complete. For such a new vehicle with so little miles, it doesn't make any sense that Ford does not have a recall open for this for any impacted vehicles.
TSB 19-2349 Oil and Coolant leaked into engine cylinders causing the car to blow white smoke, runs rough and now the long block engine needs to be replaced.
My car is only 44,000 miles yet I got 2 engine light codes on. Presence of coolant in the engine cylinders, white exhaust smoke and a runs rough especially during the first start of the day. Engine diagnostic at Ford dealership shows that it is a coolant intrusion. Dealership states that it requires an entire engine replacement despite my car being in good condition otherwise with proper maintenance.
Engine failure issue. Car started to rough idle, and started to lose power due to misfires. The poor performance placed myself and Family at risk of becoming a hazard to ourselves and other drivers because the car could encounter a moving situation that could not be avoided, and the loss of ability to move away from a dangerous situation. While addressing the problem it was found that there was coolant intrusion in the cylinders due to cracks developing in the poorly designed engine block. The check Engine light did signal indication of a misfire and bad ignition. I investigated the problem and discovered that Ford is aware of the issue and has issued TSB-2229, replace engine at cost to owner, due to Fords poor design.
Subject: Safety Complaint: Engine Failure and Stall Risk – 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost Description of Incident: I am reporting a dangerous engine defect in my 2017 Ford Edge (VIN: [XXX] ) involving the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. My vehicle has experienced total engine failure due to coolant leaking into the engine cylinders. This is a known design flaw documented by Ford in TSB 19-2346, yet no safety recall has been issued for the Edge model. This defect poses a significant safety risk as it can lead to sudden engine stalling, loss of power while driving, and potential engine fires due to overheating. Impact and Financial Burden: My vehicle is currently inoperable and at a repair shop. I am facing a repair estimate of $7,000 – $10,000. Furthermore, my third-party warranty provider (CarShield) has denied the claim, specifically citing that because Ford acknowledged this as a known manufacturing defect via a TSB, they are not liable for the repair. Owners are being left stranded with dangerous, failing vehicles because Ford has not transitioned this TSB into a formal recall or Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP), despite the clear risk of engine failure at highway speeds. Service engineer light came in and it was diagnosed as coolant intrusion. Engine failure. No accident occurred.
I have a 2017 Ford Edge with the famous coolant intrusion problem that has now caused me to need a new engine and Ford won't do anything to help me. This has been a known problem due to a defect in the way the engine was made that allows coolant to enter the cylinders. Now I am out $5,000 due to needing a new engine. Ford issued a TSB for this problem but no actual recall, leaving thousands of people with costly repair bills.
Coolant leaked into the engine cylinders. This issue leads to severe overheating, head gasket failures, and total engine failure. I've been quoted almost $8,000 to replace engine due to Ford's design flaw.
Engine caused coolant to leak into the cylinders. Cracked engine block. Had to completely replace engine. Called Ford Assist and they said my car is one year too old to help with any sort of repairs. I was stranded without and car (my means to get to work) and heavily relied on other people. I had to finance the repairs on high interest loans, which caused undue stress and financial hardship.
The vehicle has low mileage, but the 3rd cylinder wall has a crack that is causing coolant to be leaked into the engine and therefore, the long block/engine needs to be immediately replaced. This is a major safety hazard which can cause the engine to stop at any time, even while driving on the highway, which a major safety issue and hazard. The certified mechanics say that the long block part was manufactured too thin and is causing major safety and mechanical problems and shared Ford needs to recall and replace the long block as this is a common problem and major safety issue with this vehicle as research has shown.
Check engine light started coming on for a cylinder 3 misfire at around 105,000 miles. Brought to mechanic to diagnose. Replaced ignition coils and spark plugs. The check engine light came on again with the same issue. Coolant also was running low. Brought to Ford dealership who scoped the number 3 cylinder. Dealership Confirmed that coolant was intruding into the engine and that a new engine block would be required as a remedy. This is a well known defect on Ford Ecoboost engines that they have issued recalls for in the past, albeit for smaller liter engines and not the 2.0
Over heating due to coolant leaking through the head gasket.
The coolant is leaking into the motor causing an overheating issue that cuts power to the engine while driving. This is a large problem that may go unreported but Ford did change the design years down the road to help fix the issue but will not take responsibility.
Engine leaking coolant into cylinders. Creating risk of smoke and fire, known issue with for per TSB 19-2208
Known coolant intrusion issue in 15-18 Ford Edges. Coolant leaks into the cylinders, hard starts, check engine, without a new motor replaced, the engine will explode. This should be a recall since it’s consistent on almost every single edge from the years listed. I had to replace the engine at 88,000 miles. $8,000 of work done for an issue that is known to Ford.
3 months ago, Engine just stopped while driving. Thankfully traffic was light. Had it been one hour later I would have caused an accident on the freeway. Now just last week, the engine was starting rough and the check engine light came on. Brought it in and found out the coolant was intruding into the cylinders. Engine is ruined. Sounds very common for the failure of head gasket causing coolant leak into cylinders.
Coolant intrusion into cylinder block requiring engine replacement. (I unfortunately own TWO 2017 Ford Edge Titanium vehicles with the defective 2.0 L EcoBoost engine). I have had to replace the engine in BOTH vehicles which failed withing 10,000 miles of one another. This engine failed at 105,000 miles. The vehicle has been routinely maintained and the failure occured with no warning. The company is aware of the defect and no longer supports customers. There is a TSB issued which identifies the issue (22-2229). A Ford Edge forum on Facebook reveals that a decent percentage of the membership with this era model have experienced the same failure, with the same lack of support from the manufacturer.

While driving at highway speeds the engine suddenly began knocking, white smoke billowing from the car and it came to a stop. No lamps prior to failure. FORD is aware that 2017 Ford Edge vehicles were made with this defect. The dealer has confirmed code PO304 coolant intrusion into cylinder 4 and also determine that the turbo has failed. Failed turbo is also a known manufacturer defect by Ford. The safety issue is the dramatic loss of speed on the highway without warning while emitting a blinding and distracting smoke screen to other drivers.
The first symptom on my 2017 2.0 L EcoBoost engine with 79,000 miles was a rough start and check engine indicator. The warning light cleared and engine ran better while at operating temp. The symptoms became worse over the next few weeks, when I noticed that there was no heat coming from the heater as the coolant was very low and the engine was overheating. I had difficulty removing the coolant reservoir cap as there was significant vacuum and no coolant showing. When I got the cap off, the coolant boiled up, leaving a small amount in the bottom. I added coolant to make it home and called the local Ford dealer who informed me that there is a service bulletin about coolant leaking into the cylinders and the repair might likely mean an engine replacement. The engine replacement would cost $12000 at the dealer so I brought the car to my mechanic who scoped the cylinders and found damage in the third cylinder. Since he had replaced nine of these engines for the same problem and knowing that the faulty engine design had been corrected in 2020, he recommended long block engine replacement, which has been completed. Had I not noticed the engine overheating, I could have been stranded or worse -- had an engine fire. My mechanic informed me he has now replaced ten 2016-2019 2.0 liter EcoBoost engines for the same issue.
Coolant intrusion into the cylinder block requiring new engine. Issue is known to manufacturer but Company no longer offers any support to customers. Dealership confirmed issue with scope showing Crack in cylinder. I maintained the vehicle and did regular fluid checks. Failure occurred with no warning.
I am filing this report due to a serious and costly engine failure in my 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. My vehicle has always been properly maintained and I recently experienced pre-mature engine issues at only 93,000 miles. The issue began with rough starts, hovering RPMs, and eventually led to a complete engine failure. My mechanic diagnosed the problem as coolant intrusion into the engine, which I have since learned is a known issue covered by Ford’s Technical Service Bulletin TSB 19-2208. It appears most people begin experiencing this issue at 50,000-90,000 miles. The cost to replace the engine is between $8,000 and $9,000, and my vehicle is no longer under warranty. I am still paying off this car, which makes this financially devastating — and this failure occurred well before the end of a reasonable engine lifespan. I’m concerned this issue poses a safety risk, as coolant loss and engine failure could happen suddenly while driving. Ford has not issued a recall or formal repair program, despite hundreds (if not thousands) of similar complaints online. I respectfully urge the NHTSA to investigate the 2015–2018 Ford Edge with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine for a potential recall or safety action related to premature engine failure due to internal coolant leaks.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the engine was running rough. The contact became aware of an abnormal coolant consumption. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the head gasket was leaking coolant into the engine. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
The Ford 2.0L Ecoboost engine has been subject to Technical Service Bulletins due to coolant leaking into the cylinders causing recurring low coolant levels, rough running conditions, and engine misfire indicator lamps. The cause is a poorly designed engine and requires an engine replacement to rectify. The Ford dealership has quoted $10,000 for this repair. This issue has the potential to cause overheating or catastrophic engine failure.
