SIX DAYS AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE USED FROM A DEALER, MY FATHER LOST BRAKES WHILE DRIVING IN TOWN. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE BRAKES HAD TO BE PUSHED TO THE FLOOR. THE REPAIR INVOLVED REPLACING THE ENTIRE HYBRID SYSTEM. THE NEXT TIMES THE ABS LIGHT WENT OFF WHILE EITHER HE OR MYSELF WAS DRIVING WE WOULD APPLY THE BRAKES TO MAKE SURE WE HAD PROPER USE OF THEM. WE DECIDED NOT TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK IN TO BE LOOKED AT BECAUSE THE ABS LIGHT WOULD NEVER STAY ON AND THE BRAKES SEEMED TO BE IN WORKING ORDER. ALSO, WE DID NOT WANT BE WITHOUT THE VEHICLE FOR THE LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME WE EXPERIENCED IN JANUARY. THE NEXT TIME THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST BRAKES WAS SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 WHEN MY FATHER WAS DRIVING. THIS TIME THE TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS LIGHTS WENT ON. OUR DEALER SENT US TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH HELPING US OUT ON THE REPAIR TO HAVE A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE. WE TOOK THE FORD BACK TO OUR DEALER WHO ENDED UP PUTTING A NEW AXLE ON THE VEHICLE AND CLEARING THE REST OF THE CODES. I WAS SHOCKED THAT I HAD TO BUY AN AXLE. IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH A THE AXLE'S TONE RING BEING BROKEN AND NOT GIVING A READING TO THE SPEED SENSOR. THE NEXT TIME MY FATHER LOST BRAKES WAS ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2012. THIS TIME THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND HE HAD NO BRAKES AT ALL. WE HAD THE DEALER TOW THE VEHICLE THIS TIME. THE SERVICE SHOP SAID THEY CLEARED THE CODES AND COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO REPRODUCE. BY THIS TIME WE ARE BOTH DONE WITH THIS CAR. I TOLD THEM I WANTED SOMETHING IN WRITING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE IN CASE SOMEONE GOT INTO A ACCIDENT. THEY GAVE ME THE PAPERWORK STATING THEY COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO DUPLICATE AND THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS INTENDED AT THIS TIME . THE VERY NEXT DAY, MY FATHER LOST BRAKES WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. AGAIN, WE HAD THE DEALER TOW IN THE VEHICLE. *TR

I WAS ABOUT TO EXIT THE PARKING LOT OF A GROCERY STORE WHEN THE BRAKES WENT INTO A NON-POWER BRAKE MODE. I WAS ROLLING TO THE STOP SIGN. I PROBABLY WASN'T EVEN GOING 15 MPH. AS NOTHING HAPPENED WHEN I TOUCHED THE BRAKES, I HAMMERED THEM AND CAME TO A SHARP JERKING HALT. IT WAS A LITTLE FRIGHTENING AS ONCOMING TRAFFIC WAS GOING 45-50 MPH. THEN THE ABS AND BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHTING CAME ON. IF I HAD NOT KNOWN HOW NON-POWER BRAKES FELT, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE SLID INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. I SEE ONLINE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF THE ESCAPE HYBRIDS. I AM NOT SURE WHY IT IS NOT COVERED ON THE 100,000 MILE/ 8 YR WARRANTY AND ALSO, WHY THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. I SEE THERE IS A RECALL FOR WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I SERIOUSLY THINK THIS IS A LITTLE MORE OF A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONTACT HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

WHILE DRIVING, THE ABS COMES ON AND THE BRAKES BASICALLY ARE UNRESPONSIVE. I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES JUST TO GET THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN. LUCKILY I WASN'T GOING ANY FASTER OR THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I TOOK THE CAR TO MIDAS, AND THEY FIXED A FEW THINGS RELATED TO BRAKING AND SAID THAT THE CAR WOULD BE FINE NOW, BUT JUST A FEW DAYS LATER THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN. *TR

THE CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM MESSAGE APPEARS IN MESSAGE SYSTEM ON 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID, WITH THE ACCOMPANYING BRAKE WARNING SYMBOL LIGHT COMING ON. THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMS TO LOSE SOME PRESSURE IN THE PEDAL AND GOES FURTHER TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR IS FULL, SO THE BRAKE FLUID IS NOT LOW. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF NOW FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS. I HAD A BRAKE JOB DONE ON THE REAR BRAKES 2 MONTHS AGO, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE FRONT BRAKES ARE FINE. THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR 1300 DOLLARS, AND THEN STATE THAT IT MIGHT NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND THEY WOULD THEN HAVE TO REPLACE A CONTROL MODULE FOR ABOUT 4500 TO 5000 DOLLARS. I NOTICED ONLINE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SEEM TO BE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID FROM 2005 TO 2006, AND THEY ARE INCURRING THE SAME COSTLY REPAIR. SOME OF THEM COMPLAINED ABOUT LOSING POWER TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 30 MPH AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED INTO THE FLOORBOARD ABNORMALLY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN COMPLETELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT ABS TONE RING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD FILE A REPORT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000.

TONE RING WAS BROKEN $12.45 PART LABOR $226.00 I AM TOLD IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE ESCAPES WHERE A PLASTIC RING COMES UNGLUED AND CAUSES THE ABS TO ENGAGE WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH THE BRAKES WERE ENGAGED AND THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE TONE RING WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,219 AND THE CURRENT FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
