Chronological view of owner reports

Dec 2025

1. What component or system failed? The ABS/VSA Modulator Control Unit (also known as the ABS pump or module). This system is responsible for Anti-lock Braking and Vehicle Stability Assist. 2. How was safety put at risk? The failure often results in the complete loss of Anti-lock Braking (ABS) and Stability Control (VSA). Increased Stopping Distance: In emergency braking situations, the wheels can lock up, leading to skidding and significantly longer distances to stop. Loss of Steering Control: Without VSA, the vehicle is prone to "plowing" (understeer) or spinning out (oversteer) during evasive maneuvers or on slippery surfaces (rain, snow, gravel). Brake Pedal Issues: Some owners report a "hard" or "unresponsive" brake pedal during the moment of failure, which causes a delay in braking response. This is a widely confirmed issue for 9th Gen Accords. Dealer Diagnosis: Most owners have this confirmed by a dealer through Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Common codes include 121-11 (VSA Solenoid Malfunction) or 81-20 (Acceleration Sensor Malfunction). Service Centers: Independent shops frequently see this issue and often recommend third-party rebuild services (like Module Master or UpFix) because the OEM replacement part from Honda is expensive ($1,500–$2,500) and frequently on backorder. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected? Manufacturer: While Honda has not issued a widespread safety recall for the 9th Gen module specifically (unlike the 2023 "Brake Hold" recall), many individual units have been inspected by dealer technicians. 5. Were there warning symptoms? The symptoms usually appear suddenly and without prior warning, often referred to as a "Christmas Tree" dash. Warning Lamps: The ABS, VSA (triangle with exclamation), Traction Control, and sometimes the Electric Power Steering (EPS) and TPMS lights all illuminate simultaneously.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that when the vehicle was purchased, the advertisement and the odometer indicated the mileage was 79,000. The vehicle was a dealer purchase. The contact stated that when the vehicle was taken for inspection, the contact was informed that the mileage report indicated that the previous mileage was 128,000. The dealer was made aware of the issue, however, declined to confirm that the information was correct.

The car has started just clicking when push button to crank it. It's getting worse day by day. I've had to set and just keep pushing button up to 30 min and it will eventually crank when it gets ready like nothing is wrong. I've googled it and seems every vehicle 2013-2017 is having the same bad starter problem around 40- 60,000 miles. There needs to be a recall because there's ppl already putting 4 and 5 starters on at this mileage and at $800 each it's ridiculous.

Two weeks ago the FCW/LDW, Steering Wheel, Tire Pressure, ABS, and Emergency Brake lights came on the dashboard. I took the car to the mechanic and it was diagnosed as a malfunctioning ABS Modulator. According to the shop, they are dealing with a lot of similar cases for Honda Accords of around the same age. According to the dealer, the cost to replace this sensor is $1,900 since it basically controls a lot of important braking functions. I wished Honda would issue a recall of this matter considering the number of vehicles affected.

I filed a complaint on 3/28/2022 regarding the ignition starter, original request 588668, sometimes the car starts and then it doesn't and I had the starter replaced (with Honda parts), however now this ignition starter is doing the same. I was told that the wires get corroded and hence the starter needs to be replaced. I find this to be a hazard, what happens if the engine just stops??? I feel Honda should have had a recall on this, as I researched this on the internet and I found numerous articles about this issue. For a new starter it cost me a little over six hundred dollars,($600.00) with no reimbursement. My 2nd complaint number is 501018. I feel your department should look into this matter, as everyone does not have the finances to go out and purchase a new vehicle. I am sole owner and driver of my car. Thank you, Linda J. Fazio

THE CAR INTERMITTANTLY WILL NOT START AND CAN LEAVE ME STRANDED. IT APPEARS TO BE A FAULTING IGNITION SWITCH AS THE STARTER WORKS FINE SO LONG AS THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TURNS IT ON. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT WAS RECALLED ON THE PREVIOUS 2013 MODEL AND APPARENTLY NOT FIXED WITH THE 2014 MODEL.

When im driving I get my "Check Engine Light" that turns on, and it says "Check charge system" which I assume is possibly referring to the recall of the battery cable. When I make frequent stops my car suddenly will turn off, as if it lost power, and I will have to then exit the vehicle, to adjust the cables for the battery, therefore its putting my life in danger, as im having to turn the car back on.

Push button start had occasional starting problem. But if I tried starting a few minutes later it would work then it completely stopped starting. Having car towed to dealer tomorrow for diagnosing. I believe it is a starter issue. Even though car is 2014 it has low mileage.

The starter failed after only 35,000 miles. It is available for inspection upon request. Problem was diagnosed and starter replaced by Firestone Car Care in late November 2022. Problem first detected in early November 2022 and became increasingly frequent that the car would not start. Was stranded a few times and other times had to try starting the car multiple times over the course of several minutes. No warning lights, messages or symptoms prior to failure. Vehicle has not been inspected by police, manufacturer or insurance agent.

The starter fails to work. This was an unsafe situation while parked in a store parking lot at night. Vehicle starter was inspected by Honda technician who identified the starter failed. There was no warning signs, no dash engine light sign. This issue did not show up on the diagnostic that was recently done on my car during routing maintenance. The battery in my vehicle is new. I've not missed any regular maintenance on my vehicle since I purchased it in 2014 and the car is well taken care of and clean.

Car will randomly not start. Initially, the no start condition occurred once every couple of weeks. After a month or so it was happening multiple times a week. The car became so unreliable I was forced to get it repaired. Independent repair shop quoted me $350 for the starter repair (parts and labor). Multiple Honda service departments quoted me between $750 - $850 for the same repair. Each of the service managers from the three Honda dealers I spoke with told me that aftermarket starters did not perform well in this vehicle. After doing some research, this seems to be the case. I ended up replacing the starter at a Honda dealer whose service manager worked with me to get the final price to $650. This is a common problem with this vehicle and the repair cost me an extra $300 because the aftermarket starters are unreliable in this vehicle.

For the second time the starter needs to be replaced. First failure car had 33,097 miles on it. Now informed that I again need a new starter and car has 67,136 miles. First time the vehicle was just over 36 months and cost approximately nine hundred dollars to repair. Safety concern due to unreliability of vehicle leaving owner stranded and informed this is a common problem with this model.

When trying to start the vehicle, sometimes the starter functions and sometime it doesn't. The car key has to be pulled out and inserted again and maybe this will start the car. After researching on line, this seems to be a common problem, but a recall has not been issued for this. This problem happens even after installing a new battery. Thank you
