The contact owns a 2012 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the steering wheel started shaking, and the vehicle vibrated abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously received an alignment and tire rotation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the drive shaft might need to be replaced, but the vehicle needed a more extensive diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 15-076 (Vibration While Driving at Highway Speeds); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

I was at a corner waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a turn left. When I started to accelerate the vehicle started to hesitate and continued. The on coming car had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid hitting my passenger side. Since that time I had found out there was a service bulletin relating to this problem. Honda Service Bulletin 17-040. This is my granddaughters car and now I am reluctant to let her drive the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue!! My frustration is that when I have discussed the issue with 2 different Honda dealers they didn't disclose there was a bulleting but rather recommended changing the transmission fluid and the information was confusing. One dealer recommended changing the fluid once and another recommended I change it three times at the same appointment. Since the incident I have had an opportunity to drive my other granddaughters 2011 Honda CRV and it is displaying the same shudder issue on acceleration and when you are at 40 miles and try to accelerate which she noticed. Obviously, if you were trying to pass another vehicle on a two lane highway and it started the shudder you would be involved in a head on crash resulting in serious injury or death. I believe there should be a recall to correct this problem. The cost to replace the torque converter is $3,000 +. The bulletin 17-040 states the affect vehicles are 2012-14. It needs to be revised to include 2011 Honda CRV vehicle. I found the bulletin myself through a group that shares information regarding Honda CRV vehicles. The bulletin was issued on May 20, 2017 06492 Version 1. The vehicle number for the 2011 Honda CRV is 5J6RE4H72BL017198

EVERY MORNING FOR ALMOST OVER A YEAR I WOULD START MY 2012 HONDA CRY. IT WOULD RATTLE LIKE THE MUFFLER WAS LOOSE. I WOULD LAST UNTIL IT WAS WARM UP. JUST RECENTLY IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND NOW LASTING LONGER. I HAD MY CAR SERVICE THIS SUMMER AND HAD MY TORQUE CONVERTER REPLACE ALONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND THE UPDATE ON THE COMPUTER. TAKATA RECALL...WHEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE @ 30MPH MY CAR STARTS TO MAKE THIS WEIRD NOISE ALMOST LIKE THE NOISE IS WHEN YOU VEAR OFF THE ROAD AND HIT THE BUMPS.I HAVE CALLED MY DEALERSHIP IN AUGUST 2018 AND ASKED WHAT GAS WAS I USING AS SOON AS I MENTIONED WALMART AND RACETRAC HE STATED THATS WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT AND I NEEDED TO BRING IT IN FOR A CHECKUP.I MADE SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS ON THEIR WEBSITE ,1 SAT APPOINTMENT THAT I HAD TO RESET TILANOTHER SAT APPOINTMENT THEN I GOT A CALL STATING THAT BECAUSE OF THE ISSUE I WAS HAVING THEY NEEDED ME TO BRING THE CAR IN DURING THE WORK WEEK HOURS TO HAVE MORE TIME.NOTHING EVER MENTIONED ABOUT THE POWER TRAIN OF THE VEHICLE.AT THIS TIME I HAD ABOUT 72,000 MILES UNDER 80,000 I COULD NOT AFFORD THE FEE THEY SAID IT WOULD COST ME AT THE TIME SO I CANCELED THE APPOINTMENT. NOW I HAVE THE MONEY TO BRING IT TO THE DEALER AND WHEN THIS NICE GUY PICKED UP THE PHONE HE LETS ME KNOW THEY ARE INDEED HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I NEED TO GET IT IN ASAP TO BE PUT ON THE COMPUTER FOR AN UPDATE THAT IS COVERED UNDER MY POWER TRAIN WARRANTY AS LONG AS THE VEHICLE IS UNDER 80,000 MILE..ARE YOU SERIOUS!! HONDA HAS BEEN IN STALLING DEFECTIVE VTC ACTUATORS IN THE CRV AND ACCORD MODELS. ON COLD START, THERE IS A LOUD RATTLE FROM THE ENGINE. THERE IS A BULLETIN ON THIS PROBLEM. IT CLEARLY STATES THAT IT APPLIES TO ALL 2012 CRV'S. HONDA SUPPORT HOWEVER IS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID REPAIR OF THE PROBLEM BY STATING THAT IT ONLY APPLIES TO CERTAIN VINS. THE DEFECTIVE VTC ACTUATOR HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HONDA SINCE AT LEAST 2012. HOWEVER THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO INSTALL THE DEVICE IN MODELS THROUGH 2015 AT LEAST, PERHAPS LATER. I AM HAVING ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ED TO 3RD. WHAT I FEEL IS A SHUTTER AND IT SEEMS MORE PRONOUNCED WHEN THE FLUID IS COLD. IT'S PRETTY INFREQUENT BUT IT'S THERE. AT 61K THE DEALER SAID "NO CODES, SO NO PROBLEM" AND SUGGESTED THAT A FLUID CHANGE IS NECESSARY. HE KIND OF MADE ME FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN NEGLIGENT, BUT I HAVE NOT GOTTEN THE CODE AND I KNOW IT USUALLY POPS UP ABOUT 60K. I USUALLY CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID EVERY 30K-35K MILES. THEY HAVE A TSB BUT NO RECALL. EVENTUALLY A SERIOUS INJURY WILL HAPPEN. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 2013 AFTER IT WAS TAKEN TO HONDA. THEY DID NOT REPAIR IT, AFTER THAT THE WARRANTY RAN OUT.

A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE CONTACT WAS ALTERED BY THE CHILD OCCUPANT THAT THE VEHICLE HAD ROLLED BACK. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO GET INTO THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACK TOO QUICKLY. THE CHILD OCCUPANT JUMPED OUT THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THEIR RESIDENCE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THERE WERE THREE INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE CONTACT SUFFERED FROM A HAIRLINE FRACTURE ON THE ARM. THE CONTACT ALSO WENT INTO EARLY LABOR DUE TO THE INCIDENT AND HAD AN EMERGENCY C-SECTION TO A CHILD BORN NINE WEEKS EARLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NEWBORN CHILD SUFFERED FROM DISABILITIES. THE CHILD OCCUPANT SUFFERED FROM A FOOT INJURY. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V143000 (POWER TRAIN) AS A POSSIBLE REASON FOR THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 54,000.

THE GEAR SHIFT ALLOWS THE CAR TO BE SHIFTED FROM DRIVE MODE TO NEUTRAL OR "2" WITHOUT PRESSING THE GEAR RELEASE BUTTON. THIS CREATED A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING AND REMOVING A BOTTLED BEVERAGE AND THE GEAR SHIFT WAS "BUMPED" WHILE DRIVING PUSHING THE HANDLE UP TO THE NEUTRAL POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AT HIGH SPEEDS.

MY WIFE PULLED HER 2012 HONDA CR-V INTO A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY, PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, LEAVING THE ENGINE RUNNING. SHE EXITED THE CAR BRIEFLY THEN RETURNED, OPENING THE DOOR TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION. STANDING OUTSIDE THE CAR BUT INSIDE THE OPEN DOOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, SHE REACHED IN AND SWITCHED OFF THE IGNITION. THE CAR STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARD, KNOCKING HER TO THE GROUND, AND DRAGGING HER ABOUT 30 FEET DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND ACROSS THE STREET. CAR CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT HIT THE CURB ACROSS THE STREET. A FIREMAN WHO ARRIVED FIRST ON THE SCENE VERIFIED THE CAR WAS STILL IN PARK. WIFE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE AND SUFFERED A BROKEN SHOULDER, SEVERE ROAD RASH INJURIES TO HER TORSO, AND OTHER BRUISES. THE CR-V DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS DAMAGE, NOT BEING ABLE TO CLOSE PROPERLY, AND HAS A PIECE OF BLACK PLASTIC MOLDING TORN AWAY FROM THE LOWER SECTION OF THE FRAME.

ON COLD STARTUPS THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH LASTS FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE GRINDING NOISE IS HEARD USUALLY AFTER THE CAR IS LEFT IDLE OVERNIGHT & DOES NOT OCCUR ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS. MY MECHANIC IDENTIFIED IT AS THE VTC ACTUATOR (CAM} & SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE IT SHUTS DOWN THE ENGINE & THEN IT BECOMES AN EXPENSIVE ENGINE OVERHAUL. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE HONDA SERVICE DEPT.(2 PLACES) & TOLD IT MUST BE VERIFIED TO BE REPLACED. THE TROUBLE IS WHEN I LEAVE THE CAR IT DOESN'T HAPPEN, AS I SAID IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY. HONDA KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM (BULLETIN:09-010) BUT REFUSES TO REPLACE THE PART WITHOUT VERIFICATION. I BELIEVE IT'S UNREASONABLE TO LEAVE MY VEHICLE FOR A LONG LENGTH OF TIME & GO WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION. I EVEN RECORDED THE SOUND & HONDA WON'T ACCEPT THAT. MY WARRANTY IS RUNNING OUT BY THE END OF THIS YEAR & I'M AFRAID THIS WILL NOT BE ADDRESSED. MY VEHICLE HAS 33340 MILES ON IT, WELL BELOW THE 60000 MILE OF ENDING THE WARRANTY BUT THE 5 YEAR MARK IS APPROACHING. I BOUGHT A 2012 "HONDA CERTIFIED" CR-V EX WITH 34,000 MILES ON LABOR DAY. THE NEXT MORNING AND A FEW MORNINGS AFTER THAT, THE CAR MADE A LOUD GRINDING/RATTLING SOUND FOR A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE ENGINE STARTED. AS THE DAYS HAVE GOTTEN COLDER, THE NOISE OCCURS ALMOST EVERY TIME THE CAR STARTS. I THOUGHT THE CAR HAD A FAILING STARTER AND BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT ISN'T A STARTER ISSUE BUT IS CAUSED BY A VTC ACTUATOR IN THE ENGINE. THE DEVICE CONTROLS VALVE TIMING AS THE ENGINE RUNS. THE DEALER TECH REP EVEN HAD A VTC (A SMALL GEAR) ON HIS DESK WHICH HE SHOWED ME AS WE SPOKE. HE ASSURED ME HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND "IS WORKING ON IT". WELL, IT TURNS OUT HONDA HAS BEEN "WORKING ON IT" SINCE 2008. THEY ISSUED SERVICE BULLETIN # 09-010 ON OCTOBER 21, 2011. THE INTERNET IS FILLED WITH HONDA OWNERS OF VARIOUS YEARS AND MODELS AFTER 2011 COMPLAINING ABOUT HONDA'S LACKADAISICAL ATTITUDE TO THIS ISSUE. MANY HAVE HAD REPLACEMENT CVT'S INSTALLED AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE ONLY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RETURN. THE NOISE IS CAUSED WHEN COLD OIL DOESN'T FLOW TO THE GEAR AT START. THE GRINDING IS THE SOUND OF DRY METAL ON METAL. I AM NEITHER A MECHANIC NOR ENGINEER BUT I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT CARS AND ENGINES. IF A DEVICE THAT CONTROLS VALVE TIMING FAILS THE ENGINE CAN SUDDENLY LOSE POWER OR EVEN SEIZE UP. I THINK THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AS THESE GEARS GO THROUGH MORE STARTS WITHOUT PROPER LUBRICATION. I CALLED HONDA OF AMERICA AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THEM. I ALSO ASKED FOR A LETTER VERIFYING THAT THEY KNOW OF THE PROBLEM AND WOULD COVER ANY ENGINE REPAIR CAUSED BY THIS ISSUE UNDER WARRANTY. SO FAR, THERE HAS BEEN NO RESPONSE. I BELIEVE THAT HONDA SHOULD RECALL THE AFFECTED CARS AND MAKE THE REPAIR BEFORE THERE IS A SERIOUS REAR END COLLISION OR OTHER ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF ENGINE POWER FAILING AT A CRITICAL TIME.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10. UPDATED 05/19/14 MA THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR THE ENGINE IDLES THEN SUDDENLY LAUNCHES FORWARD. 2012 HONDA CRV MAKES A REAR END HYDRAULIC NOISE FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL THAT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. THE SOUND IS MADE AS THE VEHICLE IS COMING TO A STOP AND ONCE AGAIN WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTS. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN THAT HAD BEEN REPORTED TO HONDA IN FOUR SEPARATE INSTANCES BEGIN WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD 2,497 AND THE LAST EVENT WAS AT 7,800.

I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 95 AT 65 MPH. I ACCIDENTALLY LIGHTLY BUMPED THE GEAR SHIFT AND IT CHANGED FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL. MY SPEED DECREASED ABRUPTLY/UNEXPECTEDLY WITH VEHICLES TRAVELING 70 MPH AND ABOVE BEHIND AND BESIDE ME. IT TOOK A FEW SECONDS TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR AND WHY IT WAS SLOWING DOWN. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS TOO CLOSE! THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP IN ORANGE CITY, FLORIDA, DIDN'T KNOW THE ANSWER BUT SAID THAT THE OTHER HONDA CRV'S DO THE SAME THING. THERE IS A BUTTON ON THE SIDE OF THE GEAR SHIFT WHICH I THOUGHT YOU MUST DEPRESS TO CHANGE GEARS. FROM MY EXPERIENCE, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO USE THIS BUTTON. *TR
