TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT, THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE TO FIND THAT THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE CONTROL ARM WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO COCHRAN NISSAN OF SOUTH HILLS (3200 W LIBERTY AVE, PITTSBURGH, PA 15216) WHERE THEY REPLACED BOTH REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000.

AFTER TAKING MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A OIL CHANGE THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONGST 2013 AND NEWER NISSAN ALTIMAS. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF 2013 AND NEWER NISSAN ALTIMAS ON THE ROAD AND A COMMON PROBLEM AMONGST THESE VEHICLES IS THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS. THESE PARTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION ON FRONT WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES AND THESE PARTS SHOULD NOT FAIL ON FIVE YEAR OR YOUNGER ROAD VEHICLES. THE FAILURE OF THESE PARTS ON SURFACE STREETS CAN BE POTENTIALLY DEADLY AND ON HIGHWAYS MORE LIKELY TO CAUSE HORRIFIC CASUALTIES DUE TO THE VEHICLES BEING I FILED A COMPLAINT ALREADY BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM A YEAR AGO AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DOING 65 ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO AVOID A COLLISION. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US THE LOWER CONTROL ARM LOOKS LIKE IT JUST CRUMBLED INTO PIECES. THAT'S NOT NORMAL OR SAFE. I REALLY HOPE SOMETHING IS DONE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. UNCONTROLLABLE DURING A FAILURE. I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO THE ATTENTION OF NHTSA AND HOPEFULLY YOU CAN CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE SOURCES TO BE PROACTIVE AND PREVENT ANY FUTURE ACCIDENTS THAT THE NISSAN ALTIMA MIGHT CREATE

I BOUGHT THE CAR A YEAR AGO AND I BOUGHT IT AS A CERTIFIED PRE OWED VEHICLE. I WAS DRIVING AND TURNING ONTO ANOTHER STREET WHEN IT HAPPEN.

ON JANUARY 14TH 2019 WHILE DRIVING 30MPH, THE REAR CONTROL ARM ON THE ALTIMA FAILED AND MADE THE CAR UN-DRIVE-ABLE, THE REAR END OF THE CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO INJURY AS A RESULT OF THIS FAILURE. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THE CONTROL ARM FAILED DUE TO CORROSION, AND I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO HERB CHAMBERS NISSAN IN WESTBOROUGH MA. IT WAS IN THEIR SERVICE AREA FROM 1/15/2019 - 1/7/2019. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE, COMPONENTS SUCH AS CONTROL ARMS THAT AFFECT A PERSON'S ABILITY TO CONTROL A CAR SHOULD NOT BE CORRODING LET ALONE FAILING IN 6 YEARS. NISSAN NEEDS TO RECALL CARS WITH THIS PROBLEM AND DEAL WITH THE MANUFACTURER OF THE PART/METAL SUPPLIER. I WAS DRIVING UNDER 25 MPH (IN A STRAIGHT LINE) ON A SMOOTH RODE WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE OF MY CAR FELT LIKE IT LOCKED UP FOR A SECOND. MY STEERING WHEEL IMMEDIATELY LOST ALIGNMENT AND THE WHEEL NEEDED TO BE KEPT AT 2:30 TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. I MADE IT LESS THAN A MILE AFTER THE INITIAL INCIDENT (I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST WHEEL OUT OF ALIGNMENT) BUT WITH EACH RODE BUMP I HIT, MY BACK END GOT LOOSER AND LOOSER. I FINALLY PULLED OFF AND PACKED MY CAR. WHEN I WENT TO MOVE IT, IN REVERSE, THE WAS A LARGE NOISE AND I COULD TELL SOMETHING WAS FRACTURED IN THE SUSPENSION. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEEL WAS CRASHED INTO THE WHEEL WHEEL AND THE CONTROL ARM WAS BROKEN. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE SAME THING NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE18013 IS IN REGARD TO, AND I LIVE IN CLEVELAND, OH, WITH MORE THAN 100,000 MILES OF MY CAR'S 130,000 MILES PUT ON IN NORTHERN OHIO.

AFTER A TURN ONTO A MAIN ROAD IN THE TOWN OF HENRIETTA NY THE STABILITY WARNING LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND THE STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY HAD TO BE 20 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT TO GO STRAIGHT. AFTER GETTING OF THE ROAD IN A SAFE PARKING LOT I NOTICED THE LEFT REAR WHEEL TIPPED TOWARD THE RIGHT AND TIPPED IN ABOUT 15 DEGREES AT THE TOP RIDING VERY HIGH IN THE WHEEL WELL. LOOKING UNDER THE CAR I COULD SEE SOME PIECE OF THE LEFT REAR SUSPENSION METAL HANGING DOWN. THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND THANK GOODNESS I WASN'T ON THE EXPRESSWAY AT 65 MPH! THE NISSAN DEALER ADVISED BECAUSE OF AGE AND MILEAGE [ABOUT 90,000] THIS WOULD NOT BE A "COVERED" REPAIR EVEN THOUGH I WAS AWARE OF A NISSAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN [NOT A RECALL] TO HAVE THE OWNERS OF SOME 212,000 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA'S BRING THEIR CARS IN FOR REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM [SPRING BUCKETS] REPLACMENT AT NO CHARGE. IT WAS FOUND THAT IN THE 22 STATES THAT USE ROAD SALT THESE PARTS WERE DEVELOPING CRACKS DUE TO RUST AND CRACKING. I WASH MY CAR FREQUENTLY IN THE WINTER INCLUDING UNDERCARRIAGE SO I BELIEVE THIS IS AN INHERENT DESIGN/ENGINEERING DEFECT. IN 2018 NISSAN REDESIGNED THIS PART TO MITIGATE THIS ISSUE.

STEERING WHEEL PULLED TO THE LEFT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON, AND VEHICLE'S BACK END FELT LOOSE. POOR CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AFTER INCIDENT. NO INDICATIONS BEFORE THE FAILURE. NO KNOCKING OR TROUBLE STEERING. ATTEMPTED TO TIGHTEN LUG NUTS AND WAS ABLE TO SWIVEL THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL BACK AND FORTH.

THE CONTACT ALSO SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS SPECIFICALLY FOR CORROSION CAUSED BY ROAD SALT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 163,000.

VEHICLE LOST REAR CONTROL AND BEGAN SWERVING/FISHTAILING. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR FEAR OF THE WHEEL COLLAPSING IN ON ITSELF. VISUAL INSPECTION SHOWED RIGHT REAR CONTROL ARM SNAPPED COMPLETE THROUGH. WHEEL WAS PITCHED INWARD ABOUT 20 RESTING ONLY ON THE SPRING.

NOTED THAT THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION WITH NHTSA IN REGARDS TO THIS FAILURE.

WAS APPROACHING HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN CAR PULLED HARD INTO OTHER LANE. IT FELT ALMOST LIKE SLIPPING ON ICE. TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM LIT UP SO I FIGURED IT WAS SOMETHING FAULTY ELECTRICALLY. LUCKILY DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING, SO I KEPT DRIVING. A FEW SECONDS LATER IT DID IT AGAIN THIS TIME WORSE AND WITH SHAKING. I PULLED OVER ON THE HIGHWAY TO HAVE A LOOK AND NOTICED ONE REAR CONTROL ARM WAS SHEERED COMPLETELY IN TWO PIECES AND THE OTHER WAS ALMOST SHEERED OFF AS WELL. LUCKILY NO KIDS WERE IN THE CAR AND NO ONE GOT INJURED BUT COULD HAVE BEEN PRETTY UGLY. THE CAR IS IN GREAT CONDITION, NO RUST OR ANY REASON FOR THIS PART TO FAIL SO CATASTROPHICALLY.

THE LOWER, RIGHT REAR CONTROL ARM HAS CRACKED, BUT NOT FAILED FORTUNATELY. IT IS IN THE NISSAN SHOP RIGHT NOW. THE DIAGNOSIS IS THAT THAT THE LEFT SIDE IS PROBABLY GOING TO FAIL IN TIME. I LOOKED A THE MECHANIC'S OBSERVATIONS AND I AGREED WITH THE DIAGNOSIS, SO I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TELL THE SERVICE GUY TO MAKE THE REPAIR ON BOTH SIDES. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 80,000 MILES ON IT, NOW, BUT THE NOISE STARTED ABOUT 10,000 MILES AGO. I NOTICED A THUMPING NOISE AT LOW SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING OVER SMALL BUMPS, AND ESPECIALLY SPEED BUMPS.THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A RECALL, BUT MOST ALTIMA OWNERS DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND ARE LIKELY GOING TO FIND OUT AFTER A FAILURE. HOPEFULLY, THE WILL FAILURE WILL NOT BE CATASTROPHIC. I QUESTION THE METALLURGY AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE WELDING METHODS USE ON THE ORIGINAL CONTROL ARMS. HOPEFULLY NISSAN REALIZES THAT THEY HAVE A POTENTIALLY HUGE LIABILITY ISSUE HERE.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A MAINTAINED TWO LANE COUNTY ROAD AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DARTED ACROSS THE ROAD AND BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO STEER. ONCE STOPPED, YOU COULD SEE THE THE VEHICLES LEFT REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS TILTED IN AND RENDERED INOPERABLE. I HAVE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF THE CONTROL ARM BOTH WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM AND FROM THE REPAIR STATION IT WAS TOWED TO. THE CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTED AND BROKE AWAY FROM THE FRAME/PROPER CONNECTION. WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP THAT BOTH REAR CONTROL ARMS NEED TO BE REPLACED, THE BROKEN ONE AND THE OPPOSITE SIDE. THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE IS IN THE SAME CONDITION. I RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR CONTROL ARMS AS THEY SNAPPED WITH NO WARNING AS WE WERE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. IRONICALLY ONLY DAYS AFTER MY ANNUAL INSPECTION. I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC WHO HAD TO ORDER THE REPLACEMENT PARTS FROM NISSAN, THAT HIS CONTACT AT NISSAN KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND ADMITTED IT WAS ONLY A "SOFT RECALL" WITH NO PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT, SO THERE IS NO COURSE OF ACTION DUE ON BEHALF OF NISSAN TO FIX THIS. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAD 2 SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND WE WERE OUT OF TOWN. THIS UNEXPECTED REPLACEMENT COST ME OVER $900 TO FIX SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SINCE NISSAN KNEW OF THIS ISSUE. PLEASE HELP TO RECOUP THIS COST!
