The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Corolla Matrix. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the check engine warning light and the battery warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and pull over on the side of the road safely where the vehicle shut off again and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the vehicle had experienced a similar failure as in NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V384000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 200,025.
THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ON GOING FOR OVER 2 YEARS; THE ENGINE REVES UP WHEN STARTING THE CAR, RPM GOES INTO THE RED ON THE GAUGE & CONTINUES TO GO UP & DOWN FOR THE FIRST 30 MINUTES OR SO, WHILE DRIVING .THE CODES SAY IT IS AN EMISSIONS ISSUE/ CHARCOAL CANISTER, ACCORDING TO WHAT I'VE RESEARCHED. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE ECU RECALL AS INSTRUCTED BY THE LETTER RECEIVED. I WAS NOT EXPERIENCING ANY OF THESE ISSUES PRIOR TO THE RECALL REPLACEMENT?? I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE AND EXPLAINED TO THE SERVICES PERSON, I WAS TOLD THE EMISSIONS WAS FINE, BUT THEY WOULD BE HAPPY TO RUN A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT FOR $200, I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY OTHER ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH THE SAME CODES/ EMISSIONS ISSUES. ENGINE CUTS OUT UNDER ACCELERATION. ON HOTTER THAT 80 DEGREE DAYS IT WILL NOT RUN UP OVER 3000 RPMS. CUTS OUT AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE TO SPEED UNLESS VERY SLOWLY ACCELERATING. HAVE HAD TO DEALER AND THEY TELL ME IT'S THE ECM, BUT YEARS AGO THAT WAS REPLACED UNDER A RECALL FOR THE SAME REASON. 'SUPPOSEDLY'. I'M THINKING EITHER THE WORK WAS NOT PERFORMED OR THE REPLACEMENT UNITS ARE FAULTY AS WELL.
TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN INDICATING THAT THE A/C CONDENSER IS NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED THE NUMBER FOR THIS REPORT IS AC002-06. HOWEVER, TOYOTA HAS REDESIGNED THE COROLLA TO CORRECT THIS IN 2007 BY PROPERLY PROTECTING THE A/C CONDENSER LEAVING THE 2005-2006 CUSTOMERS IN THE DUST. TOYOTA COROLLA AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEMS ALL MODELS 2005-2006. I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CE AND MY A/C HAS BEEN FAILING FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS, NOW I NEED HELP AND GET TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF THE A/C CONDENSER AND FULL PROTECTION.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE STARTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 194,000.
I WAS WESTBOUND ON BROWARD BLVD. IN BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, WHEN THE CAR SURGED AND REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. BOTH OCCUPANTS IN THE OTHER VEHICLE WERE INJURED. TWO OTHER INCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE HAVE HAPPENED. ONE ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO IN 2011 AND ONE ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY 2015. ALSO, THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS TIMES THAT ACCELERATOR PADDLE SEEMS TO DEPRESS BY IT SELF SPEEDING UP THE VEHICLE. I BECAME AWARE OF A PENDING INVESTIGATING THE DOT NHTSA IS CONDUCTING UNDER CASE DP-14-003, OPENED ON 09/19/14, BY INVESTIGATOR STEPHEN MCHENRY ABOUT LOW SPEED SURGING INVOLVING MY YEAR VEHICLE.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATED. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN INDICATING THAT THE A/C CONDENSER IS NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED, CAUSING PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE CONDENSER UNIT. THE NUMBER FOR THIS REPORT IS AC002-06. MY A/C CONDENSER HAS FAILED DUE TO THE FAULTS IN THIS CONDENSER UNIT. I SPOKE WITH TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE PART IS FAULTY, BUT REFUSE TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THIS FAULTY UNIT AS PART OF A RECALL. ON MAY 19, 2013 MY HUSBAND AND CHILDREN WERE AT A REST STOP...OUR 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA WAS PARKED ENGINE ON WITH THE AIR CONDITION ON AS WELL WHEN THEY HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR THE REAR WINDSHIELD HAD SHATTERED INTO A MILLION PIECES. IT IS STILL BEING HELD UP BY THE TINT. WE TOOK THE CAR IN TO ATKINS KROLL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY JUST KEPT TELLING US THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE IT WASN'T A RECALL. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE... MY CHILDREN COULD HAVE HAD SHARDS OF GLASS ALL OVER THEIR FACES IF IT WASN'T FOR THE TINT OR HAD THEY BEEN DRIVING ON THE ROAD COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. DRIVING ON US 19 AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WHEN MY CAR ACCELERATED TO 70 MPH. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND IT SLOWED BACK DOWN AND WAS FINE AFTER THAT. ON DECEMBER 5TH I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT WHEN IT SUDDENLY STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND I HAD TO PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO KEEP FROM GOING INTO THE INTERSECTION BUT, BY THE TIME THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN IT WAS BACK TO NORMAL. I BROUGHT IT TO SUN TOYOTA AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING ON THE COMPUTER. THEY CLEANED A PART THAT THEY FOUND TO BE DIRTY AND SAID EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT FINE. ON JANUARY 9TH I WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT OF SAM'S WHEN IT ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AGAIN AND I HAD TO USE THE CURB TO GET IT TO STOP. ON JANUARY 18TH I WAS AT RED LIGHT AND IT ACCELERATED SO LOUDLY THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE THINKING I WAS GOING TO HIT HIM. I PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND IT CONTINUED TO REV AND MAKE A LOUD CLICKING SOUND. BY THE TIME THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN IT HAD STOPPED AND WHEN I PUT IT INTO DRIVE IT WAS FINE. I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AND THEY GAVE ME A 18003314331 #3 TO CALL AND REPORT IT BECAUSE AGAIN THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I HAVE PARKED THE CAR AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO BECAUSE I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE ECM HAD FAILED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE PARKED IN AN OPEN PARKING LOT AT MY VFW POST, THE CAR BEGAN TO SMOKE AND, EVENTUALLY, WENT UP IN FLAMES. *TR

AC CONDENSER STATED LEAKING ON 12/18/2011. STEAM WAS COMING OUT OF FRONT OF THE CAR AS IT WAS PARKED AT A STORE. I NOTICED THIS WHEN I WAS EXITING THE STORE. TWO GARAGES CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THE CONDENSER. I WENT TO DO RESEARCH ON THE CONDENSER ONLINE AND THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT DEFECTIVE CONDENSERS ON THE 2005 AND 2006 COROLLA APPEARED ON THE WEB. PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED ON THE 2007 AND AFTER COROLLA. CONDENSER HAS TO PROTECTION. COULD HAVE THE CONDENSER REPLACED TODAY AND BECAUSE OF NO PROTECTION, THE PROBLEM COULD HAPPEN AGAIN THE NEXT DAY. VERY POOR DESIGN...THIS LEAVES THE OWNERS OF 2005 AND 2006 COROLLAS OUT IN THE COLD! WHY NO RECALL??? RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL FROM TOYOTA FOR MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S FOR ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM). I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED. I TOOK OFF WORK AND DROPPED MY CAR OFF AT THE DEALER, SLOAN TOYOTA IN DEVON, PA. I RECEIVED A CALL SHORTLY AFTER SAYING THE PART WAS NOT THERE AND WOULD BE ORDERED, THEN THEY TRIED TOLD ME ABOUT A BELT THEY COULD REPAIR FOR ME IN THE AMOUNT OF $150.00. I DECLINED THAT SERVICE AND PICKED MY CAR UP. I RECEIVED AN EMAIL A WEEK LATER SAYING MY CAR WAS SCHEDULED FOR SERVICE DURING THE TIME I WOULD BE AT WORK. I CALLED AND WAS TOLD AN AUTOMATED EMAIL GOES OUT A WEEK AFTER SERVICE HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETED AND THEY WERE STILL WAITING ON THE PART TO COME IN FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL. THEY SAID I WOULD RECEIVE A CALL AND HERE IT IS 4 MONTHS LATER AND HAVE NOT HEARD IF THE PART EVER CAME IN OR NOT. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM READING THE SAFETY RECALL WAS THAT THE PART WAS AT THE DEALER. I RECEIVED AN URGENT SAFETY RECALL FOLLOW UP LETTER TODAY, JULY 23, 2011 SAYING MY CAR HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE AS OF THIS TIME AND NEEDS TO. I AM NOT TAKING ANOTHER DAY OFF FROM WORK JUST TO TAKE MY CAR AND THEN TOLD THE PART IS STILL NOT IN. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2006 COROLLA 4-DR SEDAN. VIN - OMITTED CURRENT MILEAGE 48820 ABOUT A WEEK AGO, I NOTICED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS NOT WORKING. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP (MICHAEL'S TOYOTA IN BELLEVUE) FOR SERVICE WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT THE A/C CONDENSER HAS A HOLE IN IT AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED - TO THE TUNE OF $685. I WAS SHOCKED BY THIS SO STARTED DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH ONLINE ONLY TO LEARN THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER 2006 COROLLA OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AC002-06 WAS RELEASED BY TOYOTA ADMITTING TO THE FAULTY DESIGN OF THE CONDENSER WHICH LEFT IT UNPROTECTED AND VULNERABLE TO ROAD DEBRIS. I'M SHOCKED AND APPALLED BY THIS. WITH ALL OF THE NEGATIVE PRESS THAT TOYOTA HAS RECEIVED IN RECENT YEARS, I WOULD EXPECT YOU TO BE GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ENSURE THAT ALL KNOWN PROBLEMS ARE CORRECTED. I TURNED DOWN THE SUGGESTED REPLACEMENT AND WILL CONTINUE TO SEEK ARBITRATION. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA. I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT SEVERAL OFFICIAL COMPLAINTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN FILED, YET NO RECALL. TAKING ACTION OF TOYOTA REGARDING SAFETY RECALL IS CONDUCTED VERY SLOWLY. I HAD GOT THE RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA AROUND SEPTEMBER 2010 IN THIS LETTER NOTIFIED THAT TOYOTA WILL SEND THE SECOND RECALL NOTICE WHEN THE REPLACEMENT PART IS READY. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING THE SECOND OWNER LETTER IN LATE NOVEMBER 2010. I HAD CALLED AND STOPPED BY AT TOYOTA (CENTRAL FLORIDA TOYOTA) SO MANY TIMES FOR ASKING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WHEN CAN I GET THE VEHICLE FIXED. ALL THE SERVICE ADVISORS AT THIS TOYOTA DEALER SAID THE SAME ANSWERS, YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA AND YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR REGULARLY IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED. I HAVE TO WAIT APPROXIMATELY 4 MONTHS FOR THE SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA. ON THE 4TH OF JANUARY 2011, MY CAR HAD GOT A PROBLEM. AT THE MEANTIME, MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR AND MY DAUGHTER, 9 YEARS OLD WAS ON BROAD. THE ENGINE WAS STOPPED WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN. FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO CARS FOLLOW US AND WE WERE NOT ON THE FREEWAY. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO CENTRAL FLORIDA TOYOTA DEALER FOR GETTING FIXED AND THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) WAS REPLACED. WE ARE NOT SURE WHETHER THIS PROBLEM WILL BE OCCURRED AGAIN. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS, THEREFORE, THE SAFETY RECALL REMEDY CONDUCTED BY TOYOTA SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED MORE EFFICIENTLY AND FASTER THAN THEY DO RIGHT NOW.
THE A/C BLOWS COOL AIR NOT COLD FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND STOPS BLOWING COOL. YOU CAN TURN THE A/C OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON AND THE AIR BLOWS COOL AGAIN FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN GOES BACK TO WARM. I'VE NOTICED A SLIGHT SMELL (NOT BAD) COMING THRU THE VENTS SOMETIMES AND WHEN I HAVE THE AC ON, IT SEEMS TO FLUCTUATE BETWEEN COOL (NEVER COLD) AND LUKEWARM. I ALSO FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO HAVE IT ON THE 2ND SETTING TO FEEL AIR MOVING. *TR

APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LATER, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM RELATED TO THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME WHERE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SYSTEM WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER BEEN NOTIFIED WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER A FULL WARRANTY AND THAT HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ADDITIONAL CHARGES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 45,173 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,988. UPDATED 3/21/11 *CN THE DEALER REPLACED THE GASKET. UPDATED 06/20/11
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON MONDAY JANUARY 11, 2011 IT BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE AND A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. DROVE THE CAR TO A AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHO STATED THE ENGINE HAD SLUDGE AND THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. THIS AUTO REPAIR SHOP PERFORMED A OIL CHANGE IN SEPT 2010 AND NOTED SOME SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE. THE REPAIR SHOP RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE ENGINE AS IT WAS NOT REPAIRABLE. I SPENT $5397 TO HAVE A JASPER REMANUFACTORED ENGINE INSTALLED IN THE TOYOTA. I DECIDED TO PERFORM AN INTERNET SEARCH TO SEE IF THERE WERE OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE TOYOTA ENGINE IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT TOYOTA RECALLS. I DISCOVERED AN ARTICLE THAT REFERENCED ODI'S INVESTIGATION OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA ENGINE 1ZZ-FE. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP STATED THAT OIL CHANGES SHOULD BE DONE EVERY 2,000 MILES AND NOT THE 5,000 MILES INDICATED IN THE TOYOTA MANUAL. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PROBLEM I'VE HAD WITH THE TOYOTA COROLLA. IN 2009 THE CAR'S DASHBOARD WIRE SHORTED OUT BEHIND THE WHEEL CAUSING THE FUSES TO BLOW. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO REPAIRED THE PROBLEM. I'VE ALWAYS PURCHASED HONDA IN THE PAST AND HAVE A 2006 HONDA ACCORD. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A TOYOTA EVER AGAIN. *TR
I FILED A COMPLAINT, ODI NUMBER 10313597 TO BRING ATTENTION TO A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS CONDITION WITH MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. AS STATED IN THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINT, MY VEHICLES ECU (ENGINE COMPUTER) FAILED WHILE IN TRAFFIC 2 TIMES ON THIS VEHICLE. I WAS PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WAS INITIATED FOR MY MODEL YEAR COROLLA. CALLED TOYOTA FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL AND THEY SAID THAT MY VIN NUMBER VEHICLE WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. I TRIED TO EXPLAIN TO THE OPERATOR THAT MY VEHICLE'S ECU HAD FAILED TWICE AND HAD BEEN REPLACED BY A DEALERSHIP. SHE COULD NOT GIVE ME A REASON WHY MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. CALLED DEALER TO FIND OUT IF THE LAST ECU WAS AN UPDATED ONE THAT WOULD NOT FAIL AND THE PARTS GUY THOUGHT IT WAS.I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO SEE IF THE RECALL CAN BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MY VEHICLE SO IF THE CURRENT COMPUTER DOES FAIL, THAT I CAN GET IT REPLACED UNDER THE RECALL. WHEN THESE COMPUTERS FAIL THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE DIES AND IS HARD TO RESTART. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANYTIME, DRIVING IN TRAFFIC, PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC AND THIS CAN BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
