TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE DUE TO A FAILURE WITH THE AUXILIARY WATER PUMP. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT AND PREVENTED THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING PAST 35 MPH. THE DEALER (GERMAIN BMW OF NAPLES, 11286 TAMIAMI TRAIL N, NAPLES, FL 34110, (239) 302-3837) INITIALLY DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED THE RADIATOR, RESERVOIR TANK, RESERVOIR CAP, AND THERMOSTAT; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT AN UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER RECALL CAMPAIGN WAS ISSUED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED AND THAT THE AUXILIARY WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WAS NOT CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED WHEN THE FAILURE FIRST OCCURRED. INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVE SEALS WENT BAD. WHICH THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR N63 ENGINES. BMW HAS A BULLETIN FOR IT, BUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WILL NOT HONOR THAT BECAUSE IT'S A KNOWN PROBLEM. AND BMW WON'T HONOR IT CAUSE THEY WON'T DO A RECALL ON IT EITHER. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, IT CONSUMES OIL AND YOU HAVE BLUE SMOKE GOING OUT YOUR TAILPIPE. I'VE BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH EXTENDED WARRANTY, BMW DEALER, AND BMW CORPORATION. THEY WANT ME TO PAY OVER $9000 TO FIX THIS, CAUSE YOU HAVE TO PULL THE MOTOR OUT. AND THIS GONNA GET WORSE IF YOU GONNA KEEP DRIVING IT

SINCE THE N63 ENGINE TECHNICAL UPDATE (AKA N63 CUSTOMER CARE PACKAGE) WAS PERFORMED ON OUR 2011 X5, WE NOTICED AN INCREASE IN ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION EVIDENCED BY THE ONBOARD SYSTEM ALERTING US TO LOW ENGINE OIL CONDITION REQUIRING ADDING ENGINE OIL. IN ADDITION TO THIS SYMPTOM THE ONBOARD SYSTEM IS ALERTING LOW COOLANT FLUID AND REQUIRING COOLANT FLUID TOP OFF. PRIOR TO THIS N63 TECHNICAL UPDATE PERFORMED ON OUR X5, THE VEHICLE DID NOT REQUIRE ENGINE OIL OR COOLANT FLUID TOP OFF AS IT DOES NOW AND WENT EVEN AS FAR AS BETWEEN MAINTENANCE CYCLE WITHOUT REQUIRING OIL OR COOLANT TOP OFF. WE HAVE COMMUNICATED THIS PECULIAR LEVEL OF CONSUMPTION ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE ONSET OF THE SYMPTOM AND WHILE DURING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE PERIOD AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS CONSUMPTION BY THE N63 ENGINE IS NORMAL AND IS TO BE EXPECTED AND TO TOP IT OFF WHEN LOW AND AS REQUIRED. AS SUCH IN ITS CURRENT STATE WE ARE NOT CONFIDENT WITH DRIVING OUR X5 ON LONG DISTANCE LIKE A ROAD TRIP FROM LA TO SF WHICH WE HAVE ENJOYED - THE N63 IS EXTREMELY NEEDY FOR FLUIDS BETWEEN RELATIVELY SHORT MILEAGE INTERVALS.

WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I HEARD A LOUD FAN NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I DID A QUICK SYSTEMS CHECK TO SEE IF ALL SYSTEMS WERE OK- THEY WERE. ABOUT 1/10 OF A MILE LATER, MY CAR INDICATED THAT IT WAS OVERHEATING AND THAT I HAD REDUCED POWER. I COULDN'T DRIVE OVER 35 MILES PER HOUR. WITHIN THE NEXT 45 SECONDS, AS I'M GETTING ONTO AN INTERSTATE, MY ENGINE SHUTS OFF COMPLETELY AND I LOSE ALL POWER. I NEVER HAD ANY WARNING AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL ENGINE TEMPERATURE ON THIS CAR. AFTER HAVING MY VEHICLE TOWED AND DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE THERMOSTAT, WATER PUMP AND EXPANSION TANK ALL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS INFORMED THAT ONE OF THESE ITEMS FAILED AND CAUSED THE OTHER TWO TO BREAK WITH EXTENDED USE. THIS COST ME $1990. THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS FROM HAPPENING. I'VE ALWAYS HAD MY CAR SERVICED AT THE RECOMMENDED INTERVALS.

BMW OF STERLING (21710 AUTO WORLD CIR, STERLING, VA 20166, (571) 434-1944) WAS CONTACTED, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FRACTURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

THE CONTACT ADDED COOLANT TO THE VEHICLE, BUT THE WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SANTA MONICA BMW (1127 SANTA MONICA BLVD, SANTA MONICA, CA 90401 (310) 829-3535) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE COOLANT WAS CONTAMINATED DUE TO FRACTURED COOLANT AND OIL LINES. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE COULD BE OFFERED. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER AND A REDUCED REPAIR PRICE WAS AGREED UPON. THE CONTACT ALSO SPOKE WITH SEVERAL UNKNOWN BMW DEALERS WHO INFORMED HIM THAT MANY OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS HAD THE SAME FAILURE AND IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,500.

I RECEIVED AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION REDUCED POWER WARNING ON MY VEHICLE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS I LOSS POWER AN CANNOT GO OVER 20 MPH. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED .I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS AN EGR AND VACUUM LINE PROBLEM. DOING A SIMPLE SEARCH ON THE WEB THOUSANDS OF OTHER X5 DIESEL OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I CONTACTED BMW NORTH AMERICA TOLD THEM OF THE ISSUE, AFTER A WEEK THEY GOT BACK TO ME AND SAID THE PARTS WERE NOT COVERED EVEN THOUGH THEY GET MANY COMPLAINTS.

JANUARY 13, 2017, I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 BMW X5, WITH APPROXIMATELY 77,000 MILES, ON A TWO-LANE ROAD AND I ACCELERATED TO PASS A TRUCK. WHILE GOING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH MY X5 UNEXPECTEDLY AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE WOULD ONLY REV WHEN I PUSHED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS WAS WITHOUT ANY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR NOISE INDICATING CATASTROPHIC MECHANICAL FAILURE. THANKFULLY, I HAD ENOUGH SPEED TO COMPLETE MY PASS BEFORE THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC REACHED ME AND WE AVOIDED A POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS COLLISION. I COASTED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD HOPING TO BE ABLE TO SHIFT BACK INTO DRIVE. MOVEMENT OF THE SHIFTER DID NOTHING AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT IDLE SPEED. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE X5, NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WERE STILL WORKING AND THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF ANY WARNING INDICATORS. THE TOWNE BMW SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $20,000. THE VEHICLE HAD AN ESTIMATED TRADE-IN VALUE $14,000! THIS OUTCOME IS AFTER I PROPERLY MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE FOR 6 YEARS, HAVING ALL OIL CHANGES DONE WITHIN THE MANUFACTURES SUGGESTED SERVICE INTERVALS. AND SPENT OVER $6,000 WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. MOST RECENT OIL CHANGE WAS DONE AT ON NOVEMBER 15, 2016. I EVEN HAD THE OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKETS REPLACED AT A COST OF $572 BASED ON THE TECHNICIAN'S RECOMMENDATION. IT IS UNFATHOMABLE TO ME AND OTHER PRO MECHANICS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. DEALER CALLED FEB. 9, 2017, ALMOST ONE MONTH AFTER MY TROUBLE BEGAN, TO EXPLAIN THAT THE #6 CAM SHAFT BEARING FAILED AND SEIZED ONTO THE CONNECTING ROD. I ASKED WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A FAILURE AND THEY SAID IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO LACK OF OIL OR DIRT IN THE OIL. NEITHER COULD EXPLAIN HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN WITH ROUTINE OIL CHANGES AND MOST RECENT BEING ONLY TWO MONTHS PRIOR.

OUR BMW X5 DIESEL HAD A RECALL DONE BACK IN 2012 FOR EGR VALVE BEING FAULTY. BMW'S EMISSIONS ARE FAILING ON THEIR 2009-2011 DIESELS. WE RECENTLY DROPPED OFF OUR BMW X5 FOR SERVICE AND FOR ANOTHER RECALL, DISCOVERED BMW WILL NOT COVER THEIR FAULT PART THIS TIME AROUND. THEY HAVE A BAD DESIGN WITH THE EGR'S AND THEY KNOW IT, THAT'S WHY THE RECALL WAS DONE BEFORE, NOW THE RECALL PART FAILED. THEY WANT US TO PAY FOR IT. THEY ARE NOT TREATING THIS ISSUE WITH MUCH ATTENTION. OUR ENGINE IS GOING TO FAIL BECAUSE OF THIS RECALL. DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO AT THIS POINT.

THE VEHICLE CUT POWER OUTPUT FROM THE ENGINE AND WHEN RESTARTED WOULD SHUT OFF. THE DEALERSHIP DECLARED THAT THE CAR HAD INCURRED WATER INTRUSION INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WITHOUT BEING FLOODED OR SUBMERGED IN WATER CAUSING TOTAL ENGINE DAMAGE THAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF SALVAGE. THE DIAGNOSIS AS A RESULT OF THIS WATER INTRUSION EFFECTS DIAGNOSIS AND RECOMMENDED FIX : DIAGNOSTIC - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT: VTC ECCENTRIC SHAFT, VALVETRONIC SERVOMOTOR, OIL SPRAY NOZZLE, 6 INJECTORS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED GASKETS AND HARDWARE. TECHNICIAN NOTE: DIAGNOSED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, CAUSED BY VALVETRONIC SERVOMOTOR FAULTS, FOUND NEEDING REPLACEMENT OF VTC ECCENTRIC SHAFT, VALVETRONIC SERVOMOTOR, OIL SPRAY NOZZLE, AND 6 INJECTORS. LABOR TIME INCLUDES TIME FOR PROGRAMMING AND DIAG. (NOTE: ONE TIME FAULTS FOR FUEL PRESSURE PLAUSIBILITY, MAY BE CONSEQUENTIAL OF VALVETRONIC MALFUNCTION OR SECONDARY ISSUE.) [OTHER]: CYLINDER HEAD, WITH REPLACEMENT GASKET, INTAKE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKETS, 3 CENTER BOLTS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED HARDWARE. NEW INJECTORS WILL NOT SEAT PROPERLY AND REPLACEMENT HEAD IS REQUIRED. NOTE: NEW HEAD COMES WITH ECCENTRIC SHAFT AND ROLLERS. THIS INFLICTS FINANCIAL DAMAGE TO THE CONSUMERS SINCE THE COST OF REMEDYING THIS IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR.

ENGINE DRIVE BELT IDLER PULLEY BOLT SNAPPED WHILE VEHICLE WAS IDLING. LOST POWER STEERING, WATER PUMP, AND ALTERNATOR DUE TO DRIVE BELT BEING DISCONNECTED. THIS BOLT WAS REPLACED AS PART OF RECALL CAMPAIGN #12V550. HOWEVER, THE RECALLED PART HAS NOW FAILED, AND THERE ARE MANY ONLINE REPORTS OF FAILURES OF THE NEW RECALLED PART. PART WAS REPLACED ACCORDING TO THE DEALER AT 13,000 MILES, AND SUBSEQUENT FAILURE OCCURRED AT 77,000.

AS I WAS DRIVING A CHECK BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON, I DROVE FOR APPROX 2 MORE MINS AS I TRIED TO PARK AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON. THEN THE STEERING WHEEL FROZE AND I COULD NOT CHANGE GEARS. I BLOCKED CITY STREET TRAFFIC FOR OVER 2 HRS BEFORE A TOW TRUCK COULD GET ME. AT THE TIME OF THE MALFUNCTION I WAS DRIVING 15-20 MPH. THANKFULLY, I WAS NOT ON A FREEWAY OR THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I WAS TOLD BY BMW THAT THE DRIVE BELT FELL APART, (WHILE I WAS DRIVING) IT WENT INTO THE ENGINE AND DESTROYED THE TIMING CHAIN AND CAM SYSTEM. THE ENGINE IS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. I FEEL THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT THE DRIVE BELT WOULD DESTROY THE ENGINE IN A MATTER OF 2 MINS AND/OR IT IS DEFECTIVE DRIVE BELT. THE CAR HAS APPROX 42K MILES. BMW OFFERED FOR ME TO PAY $2800 FOR THEM TO TAKE THE ENGINE APART AND INVESTIGATE THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION. THIS CAR HAS HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS SINCE I PURCHASED IT. ATTACHED ARE MY SERVICE RECORDS.

DRIVE SHAFT FAILURE... ON HIGHWAY DRIVING 70 MPH AND THE CAR BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE. PULLED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE. CAR THEN WOULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE ONLY NEUTRAL. CAR TOWED TO PERFORMANCE BMW . I HAD PREVIOUSLY COMPLAINED ABOUT HOW LOUD THE CABIN WAS WITH ENGINE NOISE AND A SLIGHT VIBRATION WHEN STOPPING. NOW THE DRIVE SHAFT IS RUINED AS WELL AS LEAH IN OIL HOUSING, PAN ETC

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE ENGINE OVERHEATED WARNING MESSAGE ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

DRIVING MY WIFE AND KIDS ON A BUSY CITY STREET TRAVELING 30 MPH. SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING ENGINE OVERHEAT NEEDS TO COOL DOWN WARNING APPEARED. I TURNED ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS. VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND WE WERE ALMOST HIT TWICE. WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND PROCEEDED DOWN A SIDE STREET. ENGINE OVERHEAT SHUT DOWN ENGINE WARNING WHICH APPEARED IN RED CAME UP SO I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE FOR AN HOUR. MY FAMILY SAT FOR AN HOUR HOPING THE ENGINE WOULD COOL OFF BUT TO NO AVAIL. WE WERE LEFT STRANDED @ 1:30AM IN BALTIMORE CITY WHICH IS KNOWN FOR SENSELESS RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE.
