I own a 2018 Ford Edge SEL 2.0L EcoBoost (VIN: [XXX] ). On August 24, 2021, with approximately 72,062 miles, the vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership due to engine performance issues. The dealership diagnosed coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The dealership determined the engine was not repairable and required full engine replacement. The repair invoice explicitly states coolant present in the cylinder and replacement of the engine was necessary. I paid $5,602.85 out of pocket for the repair. The vehicle was properly maintained, and I have oil change and service records from that period. No warning or misuse contributed to the failure. I later contacted Ford Motor Company to request reimbursement, as this failure appears consistent with the widely reported 2.0L EcoBoost coolant intrusion defect affecting similar Ford vehicles. Ford declined assistance, citing mileage and timing, and stated no active recall applied. I am submitting this complaint to document the failure, the repair cost, and to request review of this defect and Ford’s handling of owner-paid repairs for this known issue. Coolant is rapidly leaking into the number 2 cylinder causing rough idle, extreme venting form exhaust. Vehicle cannot be driven without causing catastrophic engine damage which could result in loss of power creating a safety issue, or engine fire. Ford knows about the design defect for years and refuses to recall the affected vehicle. The photos below are not my vehicle. They were downloaded from the internet. This is a known problem that Ford refuses to acknowledge.

I am submitting this complaint to report a serious engine defect involving coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders on my 2018 Ford Edge. The vehicle was inspected by a Ford-authorized dealership after engine performance concerns. Diagnostic testing confirmed positive combustion gases in the cooling system, indicating internal coolant leakage into the engine. The dealership has stated that the only recommended repair is replacement of the long block (engine). This condition is consistent with a known defect affecting Ford 2.0L EcoBoost engines, which Ford has acknowledged through Technical Service Bulletin 22-2229. Despite this acknowledgment, no recall has been issued for this vehicle. This defect poses a significant safety concern, as it can lead to: - Engine misfires and loss of power - Sudden engine failure while driving - Potential stalling or inability to safely operate the vehicle The failure occurred at approximately 63,110 miles, which is unreasonably low for catastrophic engine damage of this nature and indicates a manufacturing or design defect rather than normal wear.

I have a 2018 Ford Edge. In late October of 2025 my engine light illuminated. The diagnosis was a P301, indicating a misfire in cylinder one. Spark plugs and cylinder 1 coil was replaced. No problems until December and engine light came on again, same code. Coil was replaced again and in January engine light came on again. Ford released TSB 19-2346 on 12-19-19 describing a possible coolant leak in to the cylinders and a engine replacement was suggested. I feel a recall is necessary to prevent safety issues created by slower than normal acceleration and /or engine fires.

2.0L Ecoboost Engine. At 58,000 miles coolant leaking into cylinder. Creating fumes and dangerous possible engine failure situations. Service department at Ford Dealer has diagnosed and confirmed the problem with engine rebuild/replacement. The recommended solution at $12,000 in repairs. Vehicle in past warranty period.

Engine long block needed replacing at 55,625 miles. Verified by Al Packer WPB , Fl., and engineer replaced. Ford paid $3300 for block while I was charged almost $3300 for labor (after discounting over $1000 from sales/service) Block design fault per Ford on TSB 22-2229. (All 2013-2015 Edge model with 2.0 Ecoboost engines need replacing.) The danger is overheating and engine seizing … could happen while driving and cause an accident. Check engine light was on. After learning about this, I checked for missing coolant, needed to top it off as it was almost empty. Then on a restart the smoke coming from tailpipe was quite obvious. (I have that on video). FORD should pay for 100% of this repair. I have had this vehicle 8years, and have 55,625 miles on 5year/60,000 warranty.

The defect involves the engine block or cylinder head design, which allows engine coolant to intrude into the engine's combustion cylinders. Coolant mixing with the engine oil will cause a catastrophic failure and can lead to an engine fire. Ford has issued Technical Service Bulletins TSB 19-2346 but it does not cover any cost and no recalls have been issued. This is a known manufacturing defect in which Ford is taking no accountability.

2018 Ford Edge with 119K miles. Issue has been determined to be the known issue of coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The issue was noticed while stopped at a traffic light, vehicle started "reving" and showed RPM fluctuations. On two separate occasions, the vehicle lost all ability to accelerate while driving. It's also has white smoke coming out of the exhaust and has been losing coolant at an alarming rate. After multiple inspections and other attempted fixes (water pump replacement, spark plugs replaced, fuel pump replaced), it's been determined that the coolant intrusion is to blame. The vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive in the current state and extended warranty is no longer in affect due to the mileage.

Vehicle was taken in for service after the check engine light illuminated. Upon inspection, it was determined that coolant is leaking into the No. 2 cylinder, requiring a complete engine replacement. This is a serious safety concern, as engine failure can occur without warning. The vehicle is a 2018 model with only 51,159 miles, purchased new from the local Ford dealership, and should not be experiencing a major engine failure at such low mileage.

Check engine light came on. Took to the Ford dealer workshop, they checked and found nothing wrong with the engine. Check engine light came on again and this time the car jerks when it tries to accelerate. Could not go more 40mh due to the jerky motion. Took it back to the shop, they said coolant intrusion. They said it is going to need new engine because there is water/coolant intrusion. New engine estimate approximately $9000. Same dealership that we have been going to for maintenance, not sure why they did not see this from previous visits. I have seen complaints for same issue on this 2018 Edge, Ford needs to acknowledge that this is an issue.

The contact stated that the vehicle experienced rough starts. The engine misfired and had cylinder failures while driving. There was white smoke coming from the exhaust. Additionally, while driving, there was coolant leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle failed to perform properly. The contact stated that the failure was related tothe Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N12. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the plugs needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The dealer informed the contact that further diagnostic tests were needed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

2018 Ford Edge engine size 2.0 ecoboost has a coolant intrusion that Ford is well aware of but refuse to help customers with the problem. Engine could fail while driving on the highway but they have not issue an emergency recall for it.. This is a very serious manufacture error on behalf of Ford Motor.

There is a coolant intrusion into the cylinder bores of the engine. This has been confirmed by VanBortel Ford in East Rochester NY. When the issue first occurred the engine light came on and the vehicle would no longer run properly.

There is coolant leaking into my engine because the Eco Boost engines malfunction. My entire engine has to be replaced. This has already been reported as a huge issue for years and years. It needs to be a recall. TSB 19-2346

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with a flaw in the engine design. The contact stated that coolant was leaking into the engine, causing engine failure. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired because it was not under recall. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who provided the same diagnosis. Our 2018 Ford Edge started idling rough after spark plug change and after dealer tested it they told us it had engine coolant in #2 Cylinder and that driving it could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Only fix is complete engine block replacement (Recommended by Ford in Bulletin TSB22-2229) along with new turbo as it may also have been damaged by coolant leak. (Could also damage catalytic converter. This is a known default due to design fault in 2.0 litre engine. Since vehicle is off warranty, the repair replacement is going to cost over $10,000.00. I understand this is affecting a serious number of Ford customers with this engine, a number of which have been quietly replaced under warranty. I feel Ford owes their customers replacement costs on this issue and a recall should be issued. If ones motor seizes up suddenly while driving it could result in injury or death. I have contacted Ford directly, and their response is it's out of warranty so I am out of luck.

The engine failed before 55,000 miles. Collant is getting into the engine and causing a cylinder failure. This is a known problem for this engine. The Ford mechanic and other mechanics stated that they no longer use that engine due to the problem. Since I did not purchase an extended warranty, Ford is requiring nearly $12,000 to replace the engine. Started rough 1 morning, then ran fine within 1 mile. Next start was smooth, but the check engine light came on. The check engine light did not stay on consistently. The next time it felt rough, I took it into Ford to see what was happening.

Ford has a known problem with Ecoboost engines can leak coolant into the engine’s valves. This happened to our vehicle and we had to replace the engine due to misfiring cylinders. The check engine light kept coming on. We intially replaced all spark plugs and coils. Then after that didn't resolve the problem, the entire engine had to be replaced.

My car started overheating this morning. Took it to my mechanic & he told me I had a cracked head gasket where coolant was leaking. He thought there was a recall/notice about some coolant issues. Sent me to our local Ford dealership; they said my vehicle wasn't covered under any recalls. But there is a notification about this very issue. I attached a screenshot of the exact issue listed online that matches my problem.

Coolant intrusion defect. The engine coolant leaks into the combustion chamber, due to a failure in the engine block design. TSB 19-2346 issued by Ford addresses this known and serious issue for my 2018 Ford Edge, 2.0L EcoBoost engine. In 2024, I purchased a used, 2018 Ford Edge with 49k miles. A few months after I purchased this used vehicle at a dealership, my Check Engine light came on. The vehicle showed other symptoms of white smoke, coolant loss, misfiring and rough idle. I brought my car to a local dealership (not the same dealership that I purchased the vehicle) and they confirmed the coolant intrusion defect. When I purchased the vehicle, it didn't come with a warranty. I tried getting help from by calling Ford Customer Service, and they offered no goodwill assistance and no coverage assistance at all. I ended up having a new engine put in my vehicle for $7,000. This was done by a local car repair shop, not done at a dealership. I now have to pay a loan for $7k on top of my monthly car payment that existed before the new engine. Although my vehicle is no longer under warrant, I understand this issue stems from a documented manufacturing defect and has affected a wide range of Ford models. I've taken good care of my vehicle and it has been maintained regularly. I want to retain confidence in Ford as a brand that stands behind its products, but I didn't get anywhere with Ford after submitting a case and speaking with a representative and also a manager. I don't know what else to do in trying to get reimbursed for the replacement of the engine of $7,000. I would like to be added to any potential class-action.
